Ortho Zebras
No Photoshop involved. Original black and white zerbra shot was enlarged on orthochromatic film yielding a high contrast positive image. This film was then contact printed with another sheet of orthochromatic film yielding a high contrast positive. The positive and negative film were then taped together and offset just a little which alows only an edge of light through. This film sandwich was then placed in the enlarger and printed on grade 5 paper further eliminating any midtones.
That is how it was done before Photoshop.
