Comments: Last week on vacation back east where there have been cattle mutilations I was coming back from an old friends farm when this happened right in front of me. Boring back road and then WHAMMM a cow started to materialized right in fron of me. I grabbed the camera and bumped the Iso up to 16,000 and got this image. Holy cow, I got it I didnt see the purple stuff, it only recorded in the camera.

Death Valley Rail Roads Tried Miniature Trains To Save Water

Comments: As the mule skinners died out, a new group of men, railroad engineers, experimented with steam technology to move precious ore out of Death Valley. Due to the dry desert conditions, water was a scarce commodity so a series of small engines that used less water were experimented with. Seen here in an image from the Lieberry of Congress, an unidentified railroad engineer tends to the "LETC 618" the first and last miniature steam engine used to haul botox ore up the furnace creek grade and out of the valley. "618" refers to number of mule power the engine could generate. The Furnace Creek grade was an experiment in using bitumen extract to cement the desert sands together to prevent erosion from the occasional 'gully busters'. It was washed out in the great storm of '05.

Comments: No so much on the chin as just below it. Chin Ridge that is. Chin Ridge was the site of the last full skirmish of the First Bull Run. The battle that began the US Civil War in July 1861. There were two battles at Bull Run and much different points in the war. Bull Run is a small stream but big enough to be impossible to haul cannons across. Hence it formed a natural defensive boundary. If the Battle of Bull Run seems unfamiliar, you may know it as the First Manassas. Confederate historians name battles after local water features. The Union named the same battle after nearby towns. The image here is converted from infra red.

Comments: My first High Dynamic Range that came out close to right. The scene needed an exposure wider than even film gives. The lights are a bit funky since the camera moves a pixel or so between exposures differing by more than 4 stops so it get confused during the HDR process. Maybe I will find a cure.

Comments: For Jim B. This is the image I told you about. Scanned from a slide. We were on a sailboat off Newfoundland doing research while I was at the Univ. of Maine. Apparently we were pretty quiet 'cause this Russian sub either didn't detect us or didn't care and surfaced near us and I got this shot. The Navy got wind of the encounter and took my slides. They finally gave them back in the late 1980's. I've been told it is an early version of the Sierra Class or project 945 vessels. JB

Comments: Just above Zabriskie Point, two cyclists escape the valley. Highly compressed by a telephoto lens and further modified by pulling out the blue haze while converting to B&W, the mountains in the back look very close. The bikes are 1/4 mile away while the low bright hills are a mile off. The far mountains are over 10 miles away. Thats the danger of Death Valley, with nothing but rocks the sense of distance is destroyed.

Comments: Alexi Ivanchik, is a retired mechanic & h needed a picture of himself for a men's club he is in. A serious fellow, Ivanchik likes to think of himself as a capable mechanic with a strong ethic of protecting a client's privacy. To satisfy his desire for this portrait he wanted the image to not show a prominent scar on the left of his face and to de-emphasize his strong eyeglass prescription. So, I used strong side lighting by flash and removed the lenses from his glasses for the shoot, errr portrait session. I wanted to emphasize his occupation so we included some of his tools. He liked the image and I got to live.

Comments: First attempt at Infra red work with the M8. The M8 "suffers" from letting too much IR through its "blocking filter". This is fine for me. Still waiting for an adapter ring to mount the filter. Filter hand held on the front of the lens with the camera hand held at 1/30th. The image is roughly 1/4 of the full frame. The tall buildings in the back ground are down town los angeles a full 20 miles away.

Comments: Fata Morgana is the Italian name for Morgan le Fay, the half-sister of King Arthur in Arthurian legend. Reputedly a sorceress and able to change shape at will, Morgan le Fay was sometimes said to live below the sea in a crystal palace that could also rise above the surface. The fata morgana effect was so named for the superstitious belief among sailors that she created illusory visions to lure men into a false port and to their death. The term first entered English usage in 1818, when it was used to describe an occurrence of the phenomenon in the Strait of Messina, a narrow body of water between Sicily and the region of Calabria in southern Italy. The Effect here floats upside down a series of hills. The hills themselves rise perhaps 400 feet above the desert floor and they are 15 miles away. The effect was due to an atmospheric inversion that I could feel as I drove just a few feet down the road and down hill. Seen here just off I-40 in November 2001 after the Leonid meteor shower. They tried to duct tape it back on but it blew off after 1 lap. The driver(s) continued the race without the door. The team of Toine Hezemans (NL)/John Fitzpatrick (GB)/Peter Gregg (USA) took 1st place with an average speed of 131.548 kph. Speed here roughly 100 MPH. More details here.

Comments: Classic 'bad time' to shoot a pic...near noon, sun in the pic, lots of smoke and haze in sky, could'nt even see the glacier on the mountain. Then I saw the rays descending from the cloud. The cloud was there less than 2 minutes and I never got another one like it! I never even noticed the placement of the man on the dock till I got the slides back! Yes, that Lake Louise the blue green one that is so famous Love that 19mm no filter of any kind!

I had been playing with Kodak tech pan film and knew that the high contrast and ultra fine grain would suite the image well. The Object is a life size crucifix used to mark the resting place of the Church's priests and nuns.
